1969 Gibson SG Special
No breaks, cracks or repairs. All original except frets.
This guitar was purchased years ago from a retail dealer. After owning and playing this guitar for countless hours over the course of years, and comparing it against other 1960's SG Specials, which are a favorite of mine, I can confidently say this one is a great one, with no issues to speak of. The guitar has that great feel, it's got the at-home feel of a truly great, old, comfortable vintage neck.
Refretted with medium width, medium height frets. A lot of special attention and detail went into the frets so the guitar maintained a natural, vintage feel.
Tremolo works great. Guitar stays in tune, has good intonation. This is a real collectible player's guitar in all original condition. 100% original except the frets. Like most vintage guitars, the frets were very low to begin with and the guitar was virtually unplayable. The only way to enjoy the amazing tone this thing offers was to install real frets. This fret job was $600, it was like a double fret job, first we refret the guitar, then spent a lot of time filing and shaping the frets to where they are now. Total cost $600 by a very well known LA luthier. It's got the always favorable 6100 jumbo fret wire but slightly modified, a bit lower & narrower, really nice, extremely comfortable. The tuners, pickups, wiring all original. The tone of the neck pickup is absolutely insane. This is the probably the best vintage tone money can buy for the lowest price. It's hard to find one of these without a bunch of problems. This one has no problems.
There are no major blemishes, just normal player scratches and little dings. There are no deficiencies with this guitar, it's an absolute joy to play, and one that you find hard to put down. The tone of the guitar is fat & spongey on the neck, and pure The Who on the bridge. Out of the box pure classic rock 'n roll.
The feel of the guitar when bending strings is effortless and silky smooth. Tonally reminds me more of a big sounding Strat than a Les Paul. The neck shape is a classic 1960's C shape. It's not a thin neck, it's not a wide neck. The new frets make the guitar very comfortable and playable. It's the classic C neck. It has some meat to it, but is not like a 1950's fat neck. It's a very comfortable neck. The finish is still in good shape, you have 20-30 more years before the finish starts to really wear. This SG has a nice, natural 45 year old patina, one that you can't fake. It has normal player wear. It is not near-mint, collector grade and is priced accordingly. Like many of these Specials, the guitar just bleeds classic rock tone, plain & simple, it's a hell of a lot of tone for the money. And most importantly the guitar doesn't just sound great, it plays buttery, as it should, like the finest Les Pauls & SG's. This would make a pretty amazing recording guitar. It plays like butter, and sounds phenomenal. If you've always wanted one of these but were a little hesitant, I would not worry about this one. It's one of those guitars that everyone who plays it loves it. It's gotten a great deal of attention from top pro Los Angeles luthiers, and I have a lot of faith that disappointment is impossible here. If you love guitars, you will love this particular guitar. It's one of the good ones.
Because this guitar sounds so great, and works & functions as it should, I feel you have a bulletproof investment piece.
I do not have the original case for the guitar, but will ship in a very solid modern hardshell case. I have shipped over 200 guitars since 1997 and never had a break or a single insurance claim. Guitar will be packed right, and shipped with insurance.
