hello,
1960 Les Paul Special Double Cutaway 7lbs 13oz.
one of these amazing one owner, well kept, super clean, all original condition 1960 double cutaway les paul specials. guitar was an inheritance by a grandson, who said his grandfather bought it brand new and "played it every day". he obviously took extremely good care, and his playing was limited to the lower register. the original lacquer on this guitar is in amazing condition, it's incredible. the best of the best. it's hard to even believe. goes to show, most guitars are not stored in their cases. it has the lightest honest wear and to any player the fact that this was played and loved often, puts it in the highest echelon. it's clean as can be, but also stunning w/out the off putting mint look. "don't even point at it". these are meant to be played. no ugly dings. no repairs. incredible looking but also has that dreamy perfect neck and playability. the guitars that sit in the closet their whole life, never sound or play the best, have seen this time & time again. old mint unplayed guitars seem so stiff and unsettled, never having a chance to properly settle. the least desirable to players. here you have a fully functional collectors item. the wear on this guitar is so minimal and natural, and limited to the typical areas in the most perfect way- the arm, the lap, and the back of the neck. no belt buckles. the murphy lab could never in a million years do this. it's just too perfect and real. fake always feel fake. i don't know who buys those fake guitars, but not one person i know. there's only the very slightest lacquer checking, almost undetectable, obviously this guitar was kept in a case. the best playing guitar i've ever played was a 1955 TV Yellow special, refretted, at the old guitar center hollywood in the early 2000's before the 05-06 boom, when the wall was plastered with these. these have always been the holy grail, much more so than the super expensive "standard" Les Pauls from the same era.
By 1960 they'd sorted out problems and inconsistencies. This is why the 1960 Special is the year that's reissued the way it is. Perfection.
the thing that gets me the most on this guitar when i pick it up, aside from feel, tone and playability is the condition of the lacquer and the slight nature of the wear. no abuse, just light playing over almost 65 years. so often these guitars have countless owners and suffer not so charming abuse, ending up with warts and the type of wear that isn't exactly beautiful. the most incredible brazilian fretboard, so dark. when colors age this beautifully and slowly, like paintings in a museum, they're truly stunning and emotional to look at and handle. GORGEOUS.
the double cutaway tv yellow is the most desirable and valuable of them all. a dream guitar to many players. some of the best sounding and best playing, best feeling guitars ever made. the neck pickup may be the single best 50's/60's P90 i've ever heard in my entire life, ever. it is indeed a wow pickup. the bridge pickup screams like only the vintage ones can.
thankfully, this guitar was re-fretted, at the highest level, so it's actually a playable guitar. otherwise wouldn't likely have ended up here. there's no damage to the binding, very well done, in the exact perfect medium vintage style. not too big, not too small. bigger than the tiny originals, while maintaining a vintage vibe. a nice slight diamond crown, though not too pronounced. it's not often you encounter a refretted les paul where the binding is left so intact. i would say the perfect medium size fret wire.
currently a mojoaxe bridge installed, original is in good shape and included. original jack plate and jack was replaced, originals are included. the original nut was shot and thrown out along with the original frets, which combined rendered the guitar in unplayable condition. original case in quite decent condition. guitar will be shipped in a brand new molded hardshell gator case. guitar doesn't have the super slim neck, nor a super chunky neck, it's indeed a hand carved medium C neck, impossible for me to imagine anyone not being thrilled with this neck. they don't make 'em like they used to.
guitar will be overpacked, original case shipped in a separate box. can provide pro audio/video if desired, but guitar is unlikely to last long. happy to talk on the phone and answer any questions. only selling because huge move upcoming. i've been playing and selling gear for 30 years with no insurance claims to date. i will provide greater personalized service than any dealer. bottom line i don't do this for a living, don't need money, and i care at a level no dealer i've ever met is capable of. the goal of every sale on high dollar items to under promise and over deliver, and 99% of the time that's what happens. if there's one thing i know, it's the great vs the good....they are scarce!
